There really is no "most important skill" that you need to excel in college, because everyone that excels in college does it in a different way using different skills. Some people can't focus very well, but because they try as hard as they can and stay in on weekends and study they excel. Some people drink too much, but because they can focus well during the week and study then they excel.

That being said, you should probably have at least a few of these types of skills: Being able to focus, being social and/or able to meet new people easily, being able to relax while under pressure, being able to set goals and achieve them, being able to read fast/efficiently, being a good test taker, not being afraid to ask questions when you don't understand something, being motivated enough to continue trying even when you're failing.

As long as you have a few of those, you will have the ability to excel in college. Whether or not you actually excel is about you taking the skills that you already have and using them in a way that allows you to excel. In other words, take what you already have and figure out how to use it to do great things.

Don't worry too much about figuring all of that out now, though, because figuring this stuff out is precisely what college is all about.

And don’t listen to the guy that said not drinking is a skill you need – you’ll find out for yourself how drinking fits into college. For some people it fits in quite nicely and they do it a lot (sometimes too much…), but still excel. For others it makes them uncomfortable or unable to excel in school. There are so many opportunities.

Free time to be spent in cafeteria where some one will always be with you.

Library where you can explore in so many unknown areas. There is so much that you do not know in other field.You were not taught. Now the Library offers you a place where you could learn it at your pace and your wish..

So much to do to live; household works, cleaning rooms /clothes cooking etc.

So many sports activities , so many great places , so much equipments.

So many clubs and societies where you can intellectually interact

So many friends from different background ..

Soon you will realize that the biggest THREE constraint are TIME and TIME and TIME.

I have found a formula. It is 8+8+8.

8 hours for your subject that you are pursuing in the college

8 hours for all other activies

8 hours for sleep.

You learn a lot while in college...both academically and socially. Jump in during the first semester. Get to know your professors (ask questions in class, stop by their office, send emails) and get involved in clubs and organizations (to get to know people). Don't join too many clubs and organizations...you don't want to get to far behind in your classwork. But you still want to have an outlet to be social.
