People will probably respond in the following ways:

1. Grin and bear it.
2. Ripping the government off by evading taxes or exploiting the welfare system (I PERSONALLY DO NOT ENCOURAGE THESE).
3. Emigration.
4. Voting in a far right political group.

Response 1 is the predominant response of the British public.

Response 2 is a vicious circle. The government loses money and they increase taxes, which then leads people to cheat, and compounding the situation even more. It also makes life difficult for genuine people in the welfare system. Its a sad state of affairs when people, who otherwise have moral objections, feel compelled into cheating.

Response 3 could become more popular if the government introduces satellite congestion charging. Satellite congestion charging would wreak havoc on the economy. Even those who don't drive will suffer as businesses will pass increased motoring costs onto the consumer, which could fuel inflation and drive up interest rates.

Response 4 comes about when the voter feels all the mainstream parties are neglecting them.

Either way, its a horrible situation.

Start by using your Vote in May's Council & Scottish Parliament Elections... Vote for some other party other than Labour...and the next time there is a UK General election ...remember how arrogant this Labour Government has been...have a wee picture of Tony Bliar , John (Two Shags) Dr John, Ebeeneeezer Brooon (who might be PM soon ) , Bonkety Blunkett.. and the rest of the crew - along with you when you mark your X ...

It is all about supply and demand...we here in the US have a need for instant gratification. WE NEED our cars and now no matter the cost. Even on days of so called "black balling" the gas companies, many people just go and do what they need at that moment. We cross picket lines, we as a society have no loyalty which causes for many to take advantage of our NEEDS. If only we would all say ENOUGH, then things would change. But at this point it won't happen, we are too self serving.

Stop thinking any government left of centre favours the ordinary person. They are the first to get their nose in the trough. And no, I don't support the opposition.
