X is the kiss and O is the hug. Remember by the look of the letter, an X is like a profile of 2 people kissing,(><) and the 'O' is like a wraparound hug.

Wow, I'd say the exact opposite of everyone else: the Xs look like two people's arms crossing (from the side view) when they hug, and the Os look sort of like puckered lips. But I'm only guessing really. And everyone else says Xs stand for kisses. I never knew that.
