Preppy is a term that has been stolen by Abercrombie, Hollister, and AE to define their cheap clothes that are sold at exhorbitant prices. We real preps wear Brooks Brothers, Lacoste, L.L. Bean, J. Crew, Polo Ralph Lauren, and Sperry Topsiders. Someone who is preppy, is from an affluent WASP background and went to prep school and then to a respectable college (both usually in New England or the foothills of Virginia). Preppy is more than a clothing style, however. It is a lifestyle. We preps like to sail, play tennis, lacrosse, golf, and squash, go horseback riding, and hang out at our family's country club.
I'm glad at least one other person on here knows what a real prep is.

Also, our clothes might not be imaginative, but at least they will never go out of style. After all, preps have dressed the same for generation after generation and we will always have class and be known for our sophisticated taste.

Preppy haha my bf is preppy and in ways i am too.. so here goes:
Preppy hun cannot be described just as people who wear
Abercrombie & Fitch - those people are trying to be preppy!
A true prep is a person who genually comes from a well off background or from a respectable family. Usually from a public shcool.
They like to wear branded clothes such as Ralph Lauren, Calvin Klein.. etc - but not for the pure look but for the comfort too.
Girls dont wear sleazy clothes or pile on make up..
as they choose the natural look with just mascara and lip gloss.
the hair is also kept natural but sexy, long hair with little hair products used.. usually its the hot bed look :)
and for guys.. longish shaggy hair, polo t-shirts, v neck jumpers..
They are always polite and well respected. Get on well with people who share their hobbies and activities. people say they are stuck up and arrogant... just because usually they are jelaous. :) hehe

Preppy is a slang term for people that go to a prep school. Basically rich people only. They wear the YOUNG rich people fashion of the day and it is called preppy .
Young, expensive fashion that profiles your class in life. The same as yuppy is today, young urban professional, except this is related to college dress.

all you ever needed to know about preppy attached. term actually originated out of the 70s....i think right now that the term preppy is being used as a slang term and actually means the opposite of its original intended meaning. It is more of a derogatory term now.

when I think of preppy, i think of people who play golf, wear ralph lauren, brooks brothers, etc. vaction in places like martha's vineyard. they are usually very well educated, have money, and are more often than not upper middle to upper class white color.

it's a sort of highschool fashion stereotype. American Eagle, Amecrombie, are all "preppy" stores. Anythin you see someone wearing on the O.C., Laguna Beach, or show like that is going to be a "preppy" outfitt

classic clothes that have not much imagination...generally coming from abercrombie and fitch, american eagle, or hollister. Also JCrew. It's like polo shirts and miniskirts... i don't love the look, but it's very popular currently
