a buddy told me it was the wheel bearings but i cant figure out if the noise is coming from the front or back, is there a way to check and see if its the wheel bearing?

Does it only happen when you put the brakes on, if so i highly doubt it would be a bearing problem.
If it is coming on when you hit the brakes it would be either, your up for new bads and its hit the "squeeler" part that warns you that you are low on pads, or you may be up for your discs to be machined (not expensive)
For wheel beerings are your wheels getting hot. Normally a wheel bearing will cause your wheel to get excesivly hot due to it not being able to rotate freely.
Hope this helps some what
God luck

if a bearing goes bad it will usually growl or squeal.first.
A grind noise can be
1 the warning tab on the brake pad. the warning is made to rub on the brake rotor when time for brakes is near. There is a bit of movement on brake rotors to push the brake pads away from the rotor. If your noise is low it bay be that. Sometimes you can turn the steering into a turn and listen, if it stops in a turn prob. worn pads. if not pads have worn (undected) anf the steel backing is doing the braking. this will bake a grind that will get worse as you press harder on the breaks. It is not hard to see the brake pads
with slotted mag wheels you can see them from the outside of the wheel. see the grooves in the rotor?
good luck

If it was your bearing it would make the grind noise when you turn your wheel one way or the other so it really depends when and how you hear the noise.
Definitely sounds like a bearing. Like I said turn a corner, like an on or off ramp, while moving at a nice speed either direction. What ever way your going when you hear the grinding that's the one you need to replace. And I believe for that vehicle you have to replace the whole hub not just the bearing. Good Luck!!

Jack it up and give the wheel a shake (up and down)
Do you get the noise all the time or only on brake apply?
Does the noise lessen on swerving left and/or right?

No, not a wheel bearing.... I bet the brake pad is moving against the caliper piston....when you get new brake pads you should put that anti squeek stuff and put it on the back of the brake pads.

Jack it up and grab the wheel at 12 O'clock and 6 O'clock and work back and forth. You'll know if the wheel bearings bad!

check your brakes as you are hearing the warning sensor on the brake pads, the noise goes away when you hit your brakes and when you leave off the brakes you get the noise, you need new front brake pads.

If it happens wjen you hit the brakes, it means your brakes are down to nothing. It is probably the front, as it is usually dificult to hear the rears.
