Because it is a medication that can caused serious problems if used incorrectly. Just like all other medications that are dangerous if used incorrectly, birth control requires a prescription.

I don't know if this is the correct answer or not, but some people have conflicting health issues such as migraines. On pills, patch, or ring, if they start to get a bad migraine, the doctor's can stop the medication. Not so with the shot.
Besides, a health care provider's gotta inject you. They know how much to give you and won't mess up giving you the shot (no air embolisms).

it is a perscription drug that can only be administered by a doctor or nurse practioner. it is actually a form of progestin, which is a horomone used to stop the production of eggs.
