Wow so many opinions.....
they kinda fell apart for a while mainly due to a poor planning strategy. as far as compared to dell or hp or whatever it's about the same everywhere. they work with the cheapest of the month club components...whoever has cheap ram or hardrives for sale this particular month is what gets thrown in your system. It's about the same story with any build a box company
If you're not too picky about customizing then it's a realistic option. Any of them really, dell, gateway...they're all fine and come with the all important warranty.
They do have a new approach lately, even trying to pick up the gaming crowd with some high-end overclocked sli systems. Mostly overpriced though but it's a nice effort nonetheless.
If you really want to get some good customizing options or picky about what parts are used then go with a more custom oriented site.
http://www.ibuypower.com is one of the better ones out there right now.

One of my first pc's was a Gateway. Back then Gateway was just starting out and they were good. I bought one other, their support and prices went downhill. I've heard ok things about them these days, but if I was going to buy another it would most likely be a custom box, Sony or a high-end outfit.

I like Gateway . They just helped me get the right memory ,went from 256Mb to 1GB . Got a DVD,CD internal burner to replace my Cd burner , wanted to burn to DVDs . I know I'm getting the right thing at a good price . Went on line & compared . When I got my desktop I told them what I needed it for , they put together a computer that was just right for me & my needs at that time , I've had it since 2003 & very pleased ..My needs changed as I expanded my abilitys . Rather then replace a really good computer I've added to it & changed things ,like the memory , dvd burner & added many programs . More harddrive is next as I fill things up . It's fast , fun & even great for our grand kids home work .
Gateway is where we plan to go for a wireless laptop real soon.

I am more than a little unimpressed with emachines, the retail arm of Gateway. I have no less than 3 of them with cooked motherboards, and I have worked on hundreds of computers, and emachines is the only one I have trouble with on the motherboard..except for a Dell Laptop.

Ehm..
I recommend to clean up the register in order to improve your pc performances and get rid of malwares. A good program you can use is CCleaner http://bitly.com/UrAPru
It's a must have program.
Hope it helps.

Nothing but trouble. Parts are cheap and unreliable, and customer service is about the same.

Stupid me has owned 3 of them through the years. The were good early but have really sunk to the bottom. Build your own, it will be cheaper and you will get more satisfaction out of it.
