A form of hemolytic anemia called autoimmune hemolytic anemia is a rare disease that causes antibodies to be produced against a person's own red blood cells.

Two blood tests detect the presence of antibodies against red blood cells: the indirect Coombs' test and the direct Coombs' test. The indirect Coombs' test detects antibodies that could bind to certain red blood cells, leading to problems if blood mixing occurs. The direct Coombs' test detects antibodies that are already attached to red blood cells.

A Coombs Test detects a coating of immunoglobulin (antibodies) on red blood cells. These antibodies can cause red cells to break open, also known as hemolysis, which can cause anemia. If you have a positive test result, you may possibly have antibodies that can cause anemia. If you are a pregnant mother, the antibodies might possibly be transfered to your baby through the placenta and cause anemia for him.
