I've had a least 10 female hamsters in the past and have never seen bleeding from vagina. Hamster "books" mention nothing of this. She has also been giving off smelly discharge which I think means she is in season. She will be two in May. I just want to make sure there is nothing seriously wrong with her, she seems to be bleeding alot.

This is not normal. Hamsters don't menstruate as people do. Nor do they have bloody heats as dogs do.

I suspect that your female has pyometra, an infection of the womb. A pyometra can be open or closed. With an open pyometra, there will be discharge. With pyometra, her abdomen will begin to swell as the infection fills her uterus. Pyometras can occur due to no apparent reason. Without treatment, toxins from the infection will cause your hamster to begin to act sick as they accumulate in her body. The toxins will build up to the point of being fatal. Antibiotic treatment can produce a temporary improvement but it is very unlikely to cure it. An ovariohysterectomy (spay procedure) is the only way to cure it. Given the age of your hamster, it may be best to consider euthanasia, I'm sorry.

It could be a cervical or uterine tumor though these are not as common as pyometra. Given that she has a smelly discharge, I suspect pyometra. A female in heat does have a musky smelling discharge, though female hamsters only go into heat every 4-5 days. Given the age of your female, she should already be beyond the point of going into heat.

Yes you should be worried. Bring her to the vet.
How long have you had her? She may have become pregnant in the pet store, and now the fetuses are miscarriage or rotting inside of her. The smelliness could mean an infection (either from this or other causes)
She could also have a reproductive tract tumor- that can sometimes cause bleeding.

Smelly discharge is usually not a good thing- decay, infection (sometimes you will see pus, like from a zit), or diarrhea are two common causes.

Are you sure that it is coming from her reproductive tract? It could also be bloody stool or urine- which could mean a bunch of other things.

Your best bet is bring her to the vet.

Is her bottom wet? If so, that and the smelly discharge sounds like wet tail which is basically diarrhea. The only problem with that is, with small animals it is extremely deadly. It has a low recovery rate unless it's caught quickly.

I would take her into a small animal vet and have her looked at as soon as possible.

Woah. I don't think that's too normal. I'd call a vet and ask about it, and if they say it's something bad, of course bring the hamster in.

well, to be on the safe side, i would check in with her vet, and make sure it's nothing serious. you may be right, but you never know.....
if your past hamsters have never done this, then their may be something wrong.

You should be concerned! It most likely wet tail. Most hamsters die from that. I had a hamster that died from that.

my hamster has done that before, it is absoulutely natural! Just make sure with a vet if she is pregnant or not. then, just make a decision of whether to keep them or not.
