Does your external drive appear in your My Computer window? Did your external drive case come with a driver CD? Did you install that? If so try re-installing it. If not, look on the internet for the driver you need, download and install it. (You are using a USB external drive, right?)
Installing that drive inside your computer would work too but if you don't know what you're doing get someone else to do it. The nice thing about the externals is that you can turn them on and off as needed thus extending the drive life considerabley.

Remove it from the drive cabinet and install it inside your computer.

if you have anouther external drive or a internal drive then yes
