why is it as humans that we must constantly occupy our minds continually with subjects outside reality?

I believe it to be a built in self defence mechanism to keep us from going insane when the pressure of real life reaches critical mass. The ability to be creative and think outside the box often leads to novel solutions to problems that pure logic often makes impractical.
