No, hip hop is not ruining the NBA.

The NBA administation's fear of hip-hop culture is ruining the NBA.

Ever since the fight in The Palace between the Pacers and Pistons in November of 2004, the NBA is terrified that it's "image" will be tarnished.

First, they started making the players wear suits before and after every game (Jordan did this years ago, but only because he cared about his own image. But now players have one less opportunity to create their own image, because the NBA feels the solution is to make universal rules to try and make them all look similar.). The reasoning was that players wearing sweatpants sent a bad impression.

Then the NBA decided to start throwing Technical Fouls at everyone who even looked at the officials the wrong way. At the beginning of this season 06-07, players couldn't even ask for clarification on a foul call without getting T-ed up. The reasoning here was that players were arguing too many calls and sending the wrong impression to today's youth.

Now, they made a rule saying that armbands can't be worn on the arms, but only on the wrists. I don't even know what made them think this would help anything.

And Ben Wallace, known for wearing his headband (also known for his outstanding work ethic and leadership), is no longer allowed to wear his headband. (Though I think this is the Bulls' rule, not the NBA's.)

I don't think any of these things will prevent fighting in the NBA. (Look at the scene at The Garden this year.) Fighting existed long before hip-hop culture infiltrated the NBA. If you don't believe this, look up Rudy Tomjanovich and look at the punch he took during a game decades ago.

So hip-hop culture is not ruining the NBA. But the NBA is stripping the players of their ability to be individuals, and that is more likely to cause players to rebel than if they could just express themselves the way they want: by dressing how they want, talking on the court, and wearing arm and head bands if they want to.

So if the NBA is being ruined by anyone, it's by David Stern (Commissioner) and the other administrators.

Good question.

The hip hop culture isnt ruining the NBA because most of its players grew up with this culture.

Many fans and teenagers these days are also growing up with this culture. Hip Hop has its own style which some people may not like because its too "thugish."

Some NBA players, possibly influenced by this hip hop culture, believe they are thugs and gangsters. This is what might be ruining the NBA. But i still find the game of basketball enjoyable and also the leagus has took control of some of this hip hop culture by forcing the dress code.

definitely ruined the league. Stern decided to joint market the nba with hip-hop culture to appeal to younger viewers, single-handedly turning away a lot of grown men and real fans. When an entire team sport identifies with a genre of "music" this is piss-poor marketing. SInce this hip hop image pushed away most white players, you get an exclusive black game thats run like a hip hop dance contest, no traveling and fancy dunks and dribbles, no fundamentals or team play. not only this but the players act like children. They flop every time they possibly can and yell at their push-over coaches when ever they don't get their way. And the power than the coaches usually have over their players? This isn't relevant in the NBA because they players rule over all and coaches are usually fired whenever a star player objects to them. And where are the rivalries? all the players are best friends, signing eachothers jerseys before and after the games. IT HAS BECOME A STUPID SPORT SO I PRETEND IT DOESN'T EXIST. When NFL and baseball end I consider sports season over.

David Stern is hardly ruining the NBA. That is ridiculous.

The "hip hop" thing is not ruining the NBA. In fact, the NBA is in pretty damn good shape at the moment. I've been a fan for over 30 years and don't remember a league even close to as well rounded and athletic as this one is. My Dad has been a fan of basketball since before the NBA started and he says this league is light years ahead of any other time in terms of athleticism and all around skills for the players.

The problem you elude to is (I believe) the "thug mentality" which has permeated American culture. Personally, I can't stand it. I grew up in Hyde Park, Massachussettes. I know what a tough town is. I never bought into the whole "bling-bling", "keepin' it real" crap. I have never found a redeeming quality within it. I find too much of it is rooted in "one upsmanship" and a general lack of respect for other people. Making someone else look bad to make yourself "look better". All that "in yo' face" jazz. In my opinion it has cheapened our society. And before y'all try to pile on, this is my experience, so, in effect, I am "keepin' it real".

I don't think hip hop is ruining Anything... especially the NBA.
No player is forced to associate any art of his lifestyle with hip hop... the only links between hip hop and NBA are endorsements and such. You wont see Someone extravagent like Shaq driving a hybrid and listening to country... He'll be driving a HUMMER and listening to the latest rapper... cause thats what they can afford and do. I'd be lying if I said I wouldn't sell out!

the hip hop culture isn't ruining the NBA. why you would even ask? is it because Carmelo threw a punch? is it because Stern enforced a dress code? why then would you ask? how about this question.... are expansion teams ruining the league? i don't think it helps anyone to come into such a large salary at such a young age. how would you react to $2 million a year at 22 years old?

No only people who don't find rap and baggy clothes appealing would feel this way, but I could easily say skaters are ruining MTV! Statements like this show no tolerance for other peoples cultures which is not what a free country is supposed to be about.

I don't think so if it wasn't for hip-hop cultrue guys would still be wearing daisy duks. I think the NBA did it to itself when Money rather then the love of the game became most important
