There are several reasons that they change color and also depends on the lizard. In general, one reason would be as a defense mechanism to blend with surroundings. This makes it harder for predators to see them. Another reason is mood type. Usually the lighter they are the "happier" they are. Another reason specifically if they darken and flatten out is to adjust body temperature. When they are dark and flat they are trying to absorb more heat.

uh no ALMOST EVERY lizard can change it's color a tiny bit to blend into it's surroundings. however, we usually perceive chameleons as being the only lizard that can change colors because the change is much bigger compared to all the other lizards

Most people think that lizards change color to blend with surroundings. However, for the most part, lizards, especially chameleons, change color according to their mood. Males will display brighter colors to impress the ladies or to intimidate other males. Female chameleons get nasty black colors if they are not receptive to the male wanting to breed with her. If they are happy and chillin they usually stay a basic color, which just happens to be the same color as their normal environment. Nature is great like that eh.

There are only a couple different kinds of lizards that change colors. Are you talking about anoles? Sometimes they change to blend in with their surroundings, sometimes it means their mood has changed, sometimes to impress a mate. It's not really anything to worry about, though.
