While in the middle of your sleep you wake up and then go back to sleep, but you can't open your eyes, it's like they're glued shut and you try your hardest to open them and move.

I've never had that happen, but I've had it to where my whole body couldn't move before. That's called sleep paralysis and maybe that has something to do with your problem.During REM cycles of sleep your body becomes paralyzed to keep you from acting out dreams and hurting yourself. It's possible to become aware during this. I'm not real sure if this is your prob., but if you'd like to know about it just go to www.wikipedia.org and type in sleep paralysis. It's a sleeping disorder they say, but I consider it a gift because of lucid dreaming. Also check out lucid dreaming(which has it's ties to this "disorder") it's really cool and it really works. You could also check out dreamviews.com or LD4all.com. It's been scientifically tested and proven true(by Steven Laberge) plus I know from personal experience. Also, don't buy into all that crap about it being some psychic phenomenon.
btw,Andrews response to your question is what scientist call sleep paralysis, however you can overcome that fear and use it for fun. This is a really interesting subject.

I think your mind is awake but your body isn't yet. It's happened to me several times. Back when I was working two jobs. Mechanic by day and bartender by night. Exhaustion is a powerful thing and eventually, your body just says no more.

This could explain it:you were dreaming that you woke up and thought you went back to sleep.
No that was in your dream too
You tried to open your eyes in that same dream.
And that does not work well
I think you had a bit to vivid dream going on.
Ever heard of a dream within a dream?
I happen to have them too
Don't be alarmed by it,
You are not going crazy,no way.
Drops.

Something very similar has happened to me several times.
I feel like something is trying to pull me into a deep sleep (coma, death), and I have to fight to wake up. I want to wake up and scream, but I am paralyzed and mute. Finally I manage to wake up and it feels like I've just broken loose from the clutches of death.
