with y = 3x - 17 we then have
2x - 2y = 2x - 2(3x-17) = 2
=> x - 3x + 17 = 1
-2x + 17 = 1
16 =2x
x=8
So,
y = 3(8) -17 = 7

are you getting free homework help?? That's okay, I like math (and yes, I'm a teacher). Here we go: Since we know that y=3x-17 we're going to substitute that equation anywhere we see y...
2x - 2(3x-17)= 2 translates into 2x-6x+34=2 (remember that the subtraction travels with the 2... sometimes it's easier to think of minus 2 as plus a negative 2... same effect).
Now we we combine our x's and subtract 34 from each side to get all our whole numbers together. Now we have -4x = -32
Thus x = 8
By plugging our 8 into the first equation we now learn that y = 7 and we can double check our answers by plugging them all in.
2(8) - 2(7)= 2.... or 16-14=2 let's double check with the second equation. Inputting the same numbers:
7= 3(8) -17.......7= 24-17
Wooooo, we have success.

2x – 2y = 2, y = 3x – 17

Substitute the 2nd equation into the first, so you only have to work with one variable:

2x – 2(3x – 17) = 2
2x -6x + 34 = 2
-4x + 34 = 2
-4x = -32
x = 8

Then substitute the answer into one of the equations to get the y. I'd choose the 2nd one since it's already solved for y:

y = 3(8) – 17
y = 24 - 17
y = 7

Then check to be sure (I'd choose the 1st one since it looks easier):

2(8) – 2(7) = 2
16 - 14 = 2
2 = 2

So it works.

x = 8
y = 7

2x-2(3x-17)=2
-4x+34=2
-4x=-32
x=8 and y= 3*8-17=24-17=-7
