Nobody can answer this question for you, only you can decide if you feel comfortable traveling alone. Traveling alone is hard weather or not you are a girl because you have to depend soley on yourself and it is hard to be on your gurad all the time (like draging your luggage to the bathroom with you). However, it is true that there are cetain difficulties that arise simply from being female.

I have traveled extensivly (around the world) both with male and female companions and by myself, and I find that the biggest problem when there are no males present is the constant stream of cat calling (or however they yell and harass females in each culture). This gets REALLY irritating after awhile, but you just have to ignore them and forget about the harassing. On a more serious note, sometimes things go a little further. I have personally been followed/more activly harassed a couple of times during my travels, but as long as you stay in semi-populated areas and know when to ask for help, you should be OK. Also, if you stay in hostels or other travel friendly places, you are likely to find people who you will travel around with for awhile (or only for the day), but you will find that you are not alone all the time.

Just remember to keep safe. Don't travel to extremly dangerous countries. Don't go to sketchy parts of town (espically at night). Keep your guard up, follow your instincts, and know that sometimes you will have to offend people. I have had both good and bad experiences traveling alone, but for me, it is worth it because you get to see the most amazing things in the world. I just got back from traveling around Europe and in a couple months I am headed to Africa (on my own), and while I plan on bringing mace this time, I am still very excited :)

Good luck and have fun!!

Do good research and a plan; share your plan; make sure your local embassy and your family knows where you are at all times; avoid hot spots (Iraq, sudan, saudi arabia -cant even drive there- etc.); and take your good judgement along with you.
Being a female is not much different than being a male when travelling to most touristic places. I think advantages would outweight the disadvantages.
There is a book called the most dangerous places in the planet. Last time I checked, Iraq scored 4 starts out of 5 (I am sure it is 5 stars now), USA scored 3 starts together with Israel and Iran I think.
Statisticaly safest country (from crime perspective) is Saudi Arabia; but dont go there.

Wow, youre just like me!!! I have been told that going alone is not a very good idea, especially if you are a female. I thought I this idea when I was about 16, and now I am 18. I have been to 8 countries in Europe, and I did so with two of my very good friends. When you have someone there with you, its safer, and you know that you wil have someone with you when you run into some trouble. Its best if you take someone; kind of like, have an extra pair of eyes watching over you and helping you make good decisions. I hope that you will take my advice to the heart. Good luck and have fun wherever you plan to go!!

YES! You should. Neither being a girl should stop you, nor being alone.

Just be careful and sensible where you go to. There are some places that are simply not safe to travel in. (Colombia, Algeria, Congo, ...)

Don't sacrifice safety for money (ie do not sleep on park benches in Europe in the summer to avoid paying for a hostel) and keep your wits about you.

Do research about the places you intend to travel to and get advice from people who have recently been there.

I hate to be the one to rain on your parade but I say don't do it if you actually mean "around the world."

Yes, you will hear women who say they have traveled to this or that place and had a wonderful time. Who you don't hear from are the ones who didn't because they are corpses and the dead don't compose responses on Yahoo Answers.

The treatment of women worldwide is hideous as I'm sure you realize. Its only in that small fraction of humanity that resides in the liberal Western world that women are not treated like chattels and even in the West women's rights are too often violated. In Africa, most of Asia and the Muslim world they have not advanced much past the stone age.

Confine yourself to travel in the West and you will likely be more or less safe. Travel "around the world" alone and you are exposing yourself to assault, rape, enslavement or murder.

Don't set yourself up to be a victim.

feminism and woman-power aside, you best do some research before you go.it doesnt make you weak,it makes you sensible.it sounds like you arent an experienced traveler(me either) so you best respect the inherant dangers or pay the price.many places are unsafe for fit young men,how do you think you would fare?kidnapping is common in some places.wife beating socialy acceptable in others.if you arent a globe trotter, you best stick to the beaten path until you have at least some experience.

No of course not. You should take me with you. It's not a good thing for a young female to travel alone anywhere. You just happened to catch me at a down time so I can go. When do we leave?
