I can remember the moment when the idea was first thought of - I was 7, standing in my classroom and my teacher thanked me for helping a fellow student and said I would make an excellent teacher one day. It stuck and I never considered anything else throughout my teens. When I left university I took a year out and was persuaded that teaching was not the career for me I worked for years in libraries but always knew there was something missing. I'm glad to say I went back to my first idea and have not looked back. I could not tell you why I love my job but I do. Standing in a room full of teenagers discussing my second love in life - literature is the best place in the world. It's the not knowing what they will come out with next. In the space of one hour I can go from feeling young, old annoyed, angry to amused, refreshed, shocked and blessed. Yes there is a lot of crap that goes with the job like the fact I can't remember what a social life is anymore but one conversation with a student can make that sacrifice worth making. I can't imagine doing anything else.

I kind of tripped and fell into it, metaphorically speaking. I couldn't get a degree in what I wanted (folklore) at my university, so I went for the nearest thing, English. When I started my MA work, I also took on a graduate assistantship, which at my school meant teaching freshman-level courses. As it turns out, I am apparently pretty good at it, and I enjoy it (even more so now that I'm teaching literature classes as well).

Also, I think I must have it in my genes, because both parents were teachers (which had set me firmly AGAINST it, actually)

WHY did I decide to become a teacher?

I had good role models. I wanted to be like them. I loved school and I loved learning. I wanted to pass this on to my students.

I have taught grade school, high school and college students.
I was best at college teaching. I didn't have to worry about discipline problems and the students were there to learn.

It's a tough job, but it's very rewarding,too.

When I was in fifth grade I had an excellent teacher who inspired me. She helped me to believe that I could do anything and be anyone I wanted to be. I had a supportive family life but it was her and her style of teaching that made me feel like I had something to offer. That year I knew that I wanted to help make others feel inspired too.

I am now in my my 6th year of teaching at the elementary level. Although I have had many trialsome times I value each day I have with my students. I know now that it wasn't just her helping to inspire me to be the best, but me inspiring her to be the best. My students give me the greatest joy and I appreciate all that I learn from them.

I decided to become a teacher when I realized that most of my college free time was spent helping young children read better.

I come from a family of teachers and I see it as a way to make a decently living and at the same time do something beneficial for my fellow man. I also like to keep learning things.

Good luck!!!
