I can only think of England, Wales, Scotland, and not sure if Ireland is still two countries.

Do they each have governements or is there only one for the whole UK?

Great Britain consists of England, Scotland and Wales. The United Kingdom consists of England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.

All are countries in their own right with their own history, traditions and cultures. Whilst English is spoken throughout there are many Welsh people who speak Welsh and some Scottish people speak Scots Gaelic and a dialiect called Scots, some Irish people speak Irish Gaelic (similar to Scots Gaelic).

England, Scotland and Wales are one island with many smaller offshore islands. Northern Ireland is separated from the rest of the UK and is connected to the island of Ireland - a bit like Alaska is part of the US even though it's connected to Canada.

There is one central government in London but each country except England has it's own administrative powers - a bit like the US having it's government in Washington but with each state having separate powers.

Ireland is still 2 countries. The Republic is totally separate.

There is one Government for the UK, although Wales and scotland have limited self government. England has nothing, we just contribute all the money. Northern Ireland sort of does and doesn't.
