They're custom made by designers (or one-of-a-kind), so nobody has the same dress. Usually the designer will make the celeb the dress for free in exchange for the publicity. That's why they always ask, "who are you wearing?"

I think they take it free from the designers because it is like the actors are advertising their creations and their work... Plus the designers create only one piece and they know who is going to wear it, what colour and what at that particular night :)

they get top name designers and sometimes they are custom and other times people do show up with the same dresses.
