Same here. I think it's because we're an island, we're so far away from the mainland that we seem to "forget" really.

I find it kind of weird to think that we are in Europe really. Same with Scandinavia. I think they probably think of themselves as Scandinavians..? But I could be wrong. Maybe we need to ask that? :)

I call myself British a lot because I'm often talking to people from America or other countries (outside Britain) and it feels a bit "in your face" must-always-show-my-intense-patriotism to keep mentioning the exact country in Britain after a while.
Plus half of them think that England is interchangable/ the only country in Britain so I don't want to confuse them...

eg: "is Wales in London? :-/

No you're right there has always been a British thing and then there is the 'continent i.e the 'rest of Europe' Totally different way of life. Us Brits enjoy being the individuals we are. That is not to say that all continrntal Europeans are the same, but maybe due to migrant populations, etc there is more of a sense of Europe and then Britain 2 seperate entities!

I think its all about how you feel. I don't feel European. European is Germany and France etc. I don't feel British because their has never actually been a British nation, despite us having British nationality. I feel English. I speak English and I am imbued with a lot of the culture and customs. I can relate to the Scots, Irish and Welsh as very similar. But not quite the same.
I like Carry On films, steak and kidney pudding and football and I am comfortable with my Englishness. Not proud of it! Pride is vanity. And not ashamed of it either. It is simply who and what I am.

I am Scottish but never, ever describe myself as European, or British come to that. I think if we were attached to the rest od Europe it might feel more like we were included.
