Billy Joel has the distinction of writing 99% of his work himself. Elton's work is more famous, but he's got Bernie to thank for the early success. The fact these two artists toured internationally as "The Piano Men" tour shows how closely they line up.

My preference is Joel, especially his work on the Nylon Curtain.

I personally think billy joel is a better song writter and better singer. I think elton john is wierder like croccodile rock? what the heck? it's just a matter of opnion though, but I would say billy joel is better even if he is an alcoholic that drives while intoxicated and crashes his car, but won't admit he has a drinking problem.

I prefer Billy Joel. His songs are very grounded and very American plus he also writes the lyrics as well as the music. I think his voice has a lot more soul too.
Elton John's ego is almost as big as his bank account and he has also become one of those 'illustrious' artisits who has gone to Vegas to die. How many times can he regugitate "candle In The Wind" under another title.

Wow! That's a tough question. They are both excellent lyricists. For me, I'd have to say Elton John. His lyrics are the only thing I remember about the '70's

Elton John doesn't write songs at all, he puts the lyrics to music. Usually, it is is writing partner Bernie Taupin who writes the words. Billy writes and performs his own music.
