Good question; he may well have been, but many scholars shrink from the possibility that the great explorer may have had Jewish ancestors.

A Midstream article from 1998 explores the subject; see http://www.saudades.org/ccolumbusvoyage.html .

No body doubts that Columbus' expedition was largely made possible by Jews, New Christians (i.e., Conversos ) and Marranos ( nominally Conversos who secretly retained their allegiance to Judaism). There were many of them.

There is some evidence for this theory but we don't really know.

We do know that Columbus had to delay his sail date due to the ports in Spain being overcrowded with Jews fleeing the Inquisition. And he brought along Hebrew speakers expecting to encounter some of the lost tribes of Israel during his journey "east".

it quite is been suggested via some historians that he replaced into literate, yet not in Italian. The suggestion replaced into that (a million) he wasn't quite from Italy, or (2) that he replaced into from Italy yet of a few ethnic minority with its very own language... so the two way, it quite is not an prolonged bounce to him being Jewish, and hiding it from the Spanish.

I remember reading this once so I found an article on line for you. It is debatable it seems, and there is no way to tell for sure. But anything is possible.

No I believe he was Catholic because when he arrived he and his men forced the natives to convert to Christianity(Catholicism).
