This really depends on what Americans you ask. Typical opinions will say that Football(American),Basketball and Baseball are the three most popular. But, others will go more unannounced as to say that Hockey,Lacrosse, and Extreme Sports are the most popular. It really depends on what parts of the country you ask. My personal top three would be Football,Basketball and Hockey. But, that's all just based on the fact that I was raised in an area that those sports were the most important. If people live by the beach, they might say that the popular sports are Surfing,Swimming and Beach Volleyball. Those who live in the Midwest tend to pick Baseball,Football and Soccer. And people who live more to the north would choose Skiing/Snow Boarding,Hockey and Football. Like I said before, it all depends on location as to which sports are the most popular.

Bowling is one of the most played yet least watched. If you consider video games a sports then that is #1. Football, baseball, basketball and Nascar are watched by millions. It kind of depends on the age bracket and location in America. Golf is watched by a lot of the old crusties. Rodeo is popular in the countryish states.
Take your pick. Can't go wrong with Football, baseball and basketball.

According to television ratings, it's 1) NFL, 2) NASCAR (believe it, even though it's only half of the NFL's ratings, it's the second most watched sport in this country), 3) NBA.

1) American Football (GO RAVENS)
2) College Basketball(this is watched more then professional
3) Baseball(GO YANKEES, ppl watch it when their team is good)but the season is way to long
