The conjugate base of an acid (formed by proton loss) is a base. If the acid is a strong one, the conjugate base is a weak one. The opposite is also true.

Lets say you have HCl, hydrochloric acid. It is a strong acid, initially, but when reacted with something, the Cl ion becomes the conjugate base to HCl.
