Even it we were to build a high power laser, it will not propagate through the atmosphere because it will create an ionized layer(plasma) and then be absorbed of deflected by it. The best suggestion I have heard is to go to the asteroid and set up a "solar sail" and let the solar wind deflect it from the collision path.

At the moment lasers are not powerful enough to even destroy 'rockets, mortars or roadside bombs' for military purposes let along rocks the size of an asteroid!

Worse than that, destroy an on-target asteroid any way you want and get some good cover for yourself! As debris of the asteroid are going to be scattered all over the planet instead.

There is another problem that needs to be considered as well. Some asteroids come as binaries, that is, they are double asteroids when they are coming onto us. Others (the so-called rubble piles) are even *turning* double when they approaching the Earth! That's due to our planet's gravitational pull on them when they are close to the Earth. Evidence for double asteroids exist and they are many: double craters on Earth, radar imaging, photos etc.

The best thing for us to do would probably be to deflect the asteroid instead, setting it off-course and avoid the impact altogether. I'm not sure whether we are ready for that yet.

No. Lasers are just light of the same wavelengh and phase.

Better would be to use an Antimatter Particle Accelerator against the asteroids. Generate enough anti-protons, accelerate them to near the speed of light, and direct them against the asteroid, and it will kick his asteroid out of the solar system.

No....they don't have enough power and they would simply heat the comet or asteroid until it exploded..hence more asteroids and pieces coming at us.. It would probably be best to deflect an asteroid by a rocket or explosion that would nudge it away from us..
