It's easier to put water into the air because it is a passive process that occurs by diffusion and it can occur at virtually any temperture. Taking water from the air usually means you have to be below the dew point which usually means energy needs to be removed to lower the temperature. Based on this I'd say the humidifier would win.

But there are always reasons for the opposite. For example a gas furnace takes a huge amount of water from the air but it requires a huge amount of energy (enough to heat a house).
