I'm not really interested in the experience behind it, but rather, answer this question: Why do some people enjoy it and some are disgusted by it? What are the characteristics that tilt us to one side or the other?

Because horror is quite different from what we see in our everyday lives. What else is there? Action, comedy, drama... Well, we can see action all around us (just turn on the news), comedy is everywhere too, and we all have some drama goin' on.

Horror movies provide what movies are supposed to give us.. an escape. Some people don't like that I guess; they can't handle the sharp change from reality. An open mind helps.

I have always heard people enjoy horror movies because it brings out the dark side in people. Majority of people keep that side repressed. People see the characters in those movies acting out fantasies that they have in their mind (for example killing your boss or a cheating spouse). Some people just like the adrenaline rush they get from getting scared too.

Only those people who have never experienced a moment of horror enjoy horror movies. You ask anyone who has been tortured or made to feel alienated by peers and I guarantee those people do not enjoy seeing their pain and suffering duplicated in vivid colours.

I think because we enjoy the sense of controlled fear that it gives us. It scares us, but we know there's no real danger behind it. Some people just don't like horror movies, they think they're stupid. I think it's just a personal thing.

Who's we?

I don't "Enjoy" them unless they have a story line and a plot worth sitting through. I loved 13 Ghosts, Silent Hill, The Exorcist, I love old episodes of Dark Shadows and Christopher Lee movies, things like that...Classics.

I hate movies like Saw... Pointless and gross!

adrenaline rush and the revolted sensation to see what we don't want to see. Like passing a bad car wreck, you don't want to see it but you can't 'not-look'.
