I am trying to decide if I should buy a ipod or a mp3 player. I do not need video just a good sound, not really too fragile and inexpensive. Any suggestions/opinions/recommendations? And why do you recommend that item?

Oh, I'm just going to love answering this question, Knowing that I'm telling you something that not a lot of people believe or know, AN IPOD IS AN MP3 PLAYER YOU IDIOT , anyways, no offense or anything, but I just had to make that point,

To my next point, Don't get an ipod, please, they're a waste of money and aren't worth the plastic they're made of.
and I agree with JOE ,The only reason why people get ipods are because of the cool "dancing" advertisements that they have on tv ect., Oh yea...and because EVERYONE ELSE HAS THEM, you don't want to be the wanna be that follows the rest of the crowd? do you? Ipods are overpriced media player wanna-bees that just make their money from stupid people (which there are ALOT of them) that don't care to research before they buy something that expensive.

Go for the creative Zen vision M, it's about the same price as a ipod nano, except has a bagillion more features, and is the equivilant to an Ipod 5th generation video.

Reasons why you should get a Zen Vision M:
1.} You're not limited to just ITUNES, you can buy music from about every online store there is, apple basically forces you to buy from their overpriced music store...which is a total rip off, why should they tell you where to buy from when you already spent up to 300 bucks or more on their POS?"

2.}has a Radio, which ipods don't have, what if you get tired of your own music?

3.} Almost TWICE as much battery life than the ipod video

4.} voice and radio recorder, which most people don't use...I know I don't much...But it's still good to know that you have it.

5.} Compatible with way more file formats, no converting tons of files before syncing them because it comes with the software to do that on the rare occasion that you will need to convert the file before syncing it.

6}noticeably better video quality with 262,144 colors, I was seriously blown away when I first turned mine on, if you turn off the lights in a room at night, I swear the 2.5 inch screen just illuminates the whole room. better than any player that small that I've seen.

7.} in my opinion, you can scroll through large music collections way easier than ipods, that scrolling wheel gets so fricken annoying, when in the vision m, you just press and hold one button and you can scroll through thousands of songs or artist before your eyes.

8.} superb audio quality, who do you think makes most of the sound cards in most computers? Creative. so who do you think would make the best sounding mp3 player? think REAL hard.

9.} you will NEVER need a flash drive again, it has this really cool feature on it that lets you actually manually pick between 512mb to 16 gigs of storage to put away on your mp3 player so you can just plug it in and copy any files to it, using it as the ultimate flash drive.which I don't think any other mp3 player can do.
----------------------------------------------------------------
All electronics in my opinions have their bad sides....the creative zen vision m has less than any other player I've ever tried, ipod is just a poser (they got a 100 million dollar lawsuit from creative for copying off of the vision m btw....they didn't mention that on their colorfull comercials , did they?)so just so there wont be any suprises, I'll tell you the cons

1.} it's a little thicker and bulkier than the ipod...which for me isn't a con..on the count of I don't like little things that are so thin and fragile that they'll break on the first drop.

2.} has less accessories than the ipod...which also isn't a con for me..because if I had an ipod...which I'm happy I don't...I'd be tempted to buy cute little "clothes" for them on the count of I like cute little things, but the vision m doesn't have many..other than it's cases, so i wont have to waste my money on things like socks for my mp3 player....look what that's comming to....something is SERIOUSLY wrong when your mp3 player is dressed warmer than a hobo on the street.

3.} the headphones that come with it are cheap, but and then again, EVERY mp3 player comes with cheap headphones...so if you decide to get it...I suggest you invest in some better headphones..which will only cost you up to 20 bucks...just to hear the audio player's full potential.
------------------------------------------------------------
So, if you don't mind those minor setbacks, which I don't at all, considering how much more things I can do with this baby--take your mind off apple completely, The creative Zen vision M is the ultimate Ipod killa.

Apple really makes the best mp3 player...the iPod. They all do the same thing (store mp3 files and play them) but the ipod is quality built and has the click wheel. None of the other mp3 players have the click wheel and it's very helpful when navigating through all your files. This is coming from an experienced mp3 player user.

I recommend the ipod nano since it's small, easy to use and relatively inexpensive. You don't need any more than 4 gigabytes of storage if you are a light user, 2 gigabytes should be fine.

Buy one new from a place like circuit city (best price in a store) or shop on ebay.com. There are alot of reputable sellers who are selling refurbished ipods, which are used but have been cleaned up and repaired to like-new specifications (and half the price). Ebay sellers "blue-bay-electronics" and "inflatablemadness" are two great sellers of ipods (search ebay by seller name). I would get the 2 GB ipod nano for under $100, and you should be fine for a long time. When you are done with it (and ready to get a better one), sell it back on ebay, you'll be surprised how much you get back for it a few years down the road.

Just keep in mind as mp3 players get old, their battery life and reliability greatly decreases so stay away from buying older used ipods even if it's cheap.

For ipods the shuffle is the only unit that is < $100.
Sandisk and Creative make good mp3 players and you'll find more options in that price range than Apple.

Sandisk is a well known manufacturer of flash memory devices. Their mp3 players have slots that accept memory cards so you can increase the capacity very easily.

ipod is a fad, or trend, there are other players available that provide better cost efficient quality and features, look into creative labs Zen or Microsoft Zune player, which can work with the 360 if you have one... also you can go the PDA route, I use my palm lifedrive for my portable media, and it is a pda, so i have wifi internet access and much more then what a standard mp3/video player has to offer, it depends on your budjet, and features you are looking for,
