I can rotate the pump housing slightly but it won't move forwards. I'm scared to beat on it.

To take the pump out of a 700R4 you need to take the filter out of it. The filter is found (unfortunately for you) next to the valve body, which is under the pan.

The filter is probably keeping your pump from coming out all the way.

Also, often the pump won't come out easily even if you take the filter out. I've found a gentle prying on the botom of the pump body against the input clutch housing is needed. Just go easy, and try and distribute the prying force as widely as possible across the pump body.

In addition to the filter keeping the pump in...the Torque Converter Clutch solenoid has to be removed also.

Sometimes a slide hammer(s) is needed to 'pop' it loose. The seal may be preventing it from coming out (O-ring seal on outer edge of pump).

Why would you start a job of this degree with out first getting a Chilton's from Auto Zone or NAPA!!
