WHAT THEIR PROBLEM

i mean extending school days what do they want from us.

Why can' they be happy with where we are and how smart some students in the school are.

How far are they going to push these students, man im tired we need to do homework also.

I read it in the yahoo front page and adults you have nothing to disagree with me about because when you went to school you did not have extended school hours so there!

I AM MAD about this

I totally agree..er I think..Homework..way too much, they make us waste away our childhood and then bring it home with that crap. I'm a very intellectual guy but I think a lot of the things they are indoctrinating us with are frivolous.http://www.studentsforacademicfreedom.org/

I'm an adult with two small children. I can tell your very upset.

Frankly, I agree with you. School days are too long, and there should be no homework at all. This may sound radical to parents, but it makes sense.

The real reason most parents want their children in school longer is to reduce the their own cost of daycare. I don't think anyone would agree that adding extra time will NOT make the day more productive. In fact, just the opposite.

Whereas if school were run more efficiently and effectively, learning could be done in the school room (and not at home, adding yet again to the students day). There should be no homework. The vast majority of parents are not qualified to teach. To be a teacher, one must earn a degree and then be licensed to teach. If these assignments are not being done at school, what IS going on? The whole point of a student going to school is to do the work there, not to have it be pawned off onto the (under-qualified) parents.

The bad news is John B's right...it only gets worse.

Who exactly are the 'they' you are talking about? High schools are not people. The 'they' are all of the politicians, from the President on down that are forcing the No Child Left Behind Act. I doubt you will see many of your teachers wanting to work an extra 10 hours a week on top of the 60 or so they already work. The reason lawmakers are wanting to make the school day longer is because US test scores are not improving.
I understand your stress but the best way to handle it is to research the problem longer days would cause and create a well-written letter to the editor. Also give a copy to your principal and school district leader.

Maybe because most tests show that you're NOT smart. They want you to be able to read at an adult level, do necessary math, and finish college. We need an educated popluation, and look around - we really don't have one, even though we spend more on education than pretty much any other nation. The difference? Their kids are much smarter than ours - and they don't have nearly as much time off as our kids.

Of course you need to do homework. And you'll be doing a lot more in college. It's time to learn some responsibility. I spend most of my time in school. Extended hours? Ha. Try being a grad student sometime. I can't even sleep through a night without being called back into work at 2 am, much less getting a weekend off.

Stay in school. It gets worse. Perhaps you can get some relief from the polite people on the Internet.
