Some colleges and universities show admissions preference and/or scholarship preference to students who are the first ones in their families to go to college.

If your parents, aunts, uncles, and grandparents did not go to college, then you are a first generation college student.

You are still a first generation college student if your older siblings did go to college, as long as your parents, aunts, uncles, and grandparents did not.

Also, many colleges do not count aunts and uncles. You must ask the admissions officers at each college about whether they include aunts and uncles in determining whether an applicant is a first generation college student.

To me it's the first generation that attended college, a student who attends but his parents didn't.

Don't quote me on this, but I think it means that they are the first person in their family to go to college.
