I'm not knocking teachers and or educators that do a fine job at what they do, however I am a huge advocate that what we value in school does NOT make a person smarter!

Be honest, how many people here (save maybe 30%) actually used what they learned in high or middle school? All that alegra and trig that was drilled into my head has not helped me one once in my chosen career.

They say goto school and you will get a good job. Bull! High school diploma's these days will get you a job as cashier, and guess what? You dont need algebra or trig, and kids have way too much English!

Why dont we teach our kids how to handle their money? Have a class where you must learn how to write a check and how to invest instead of mindless math that kids won't use?

Does anyone agree or disagree?

I rushed through writing the question. For the people who are going to bash my grammar and style, I make 100k with nothing I learned in school. :)

I agree that children need to be taught more lifeskills that are prevalent to their future and after joining Yanswers, I have sorely discovered that spelling and grammar skills are lacking and may need to be reinforced all through the school years.

I don't think our educational system works, but not for the reasons you're stating. I did get some practical education in school, but I objected to the boring way I was taught (by rote and memorization) and how my teachers treated students (they hit and mocked students if they were unpopular kids). I went to rural poor midwestern schools in the 60's & 70's.

I think what is and has been missing from our educational system is teaching children how to think critically.

I also don't equate success with how much money you make; that's why I hope that if children were taught how to think critically, they could figure out what was important for themselves and society, without assuming money was the cure-all.

One significant subject is the NCLB regulation. This regulation think to guarantee all pupils analyzing on grade point. however the reality is, faculties get funds if the youngsters do good on the analyzing tests. SO, faculties now in basic terms coach what's on those tests, so the youngsters can pass, so the colleges can get extra funds. it is boring, newborn will not be able to benefit anymore, in basic terms take a seat there and be spoon fed by skill of instructors to MEMORIZE and not learn techniques so they might pass the tests so the college can get that funds. yet another subject is, NCLB regulation mandates that faculties with the less disclipline subject concerns gets extra funds. So, WHY is there nonetheless lots extra undesirable habit than ever in the previous? the only way that the 'powers that be' can comprehend if faculties have disclipline subject concerns or not is by skill of the colleges written disclipline records. faculties do not prefer disclipline records so they might get that funds. SO, particularly of colleges certainly discliplining the youngsters to get the money, they don't disclipline them in any respect. because of the fact of this tehre is bullying, scuffling with, KILLING in faculties. there are various instructors right here on solutions who're desperately searching for help for disclipline subject concerns and that i continuously ask your self why they dont' carry on with the colleges disclipline plan? some have advised me it is because of the fact whilst they DO, the crucial and others ABOVE them do not carry on with the coverage themselves! So the crucial does not enable suspensions, detention, and so on so there will be no data so they might GET that funds.

You need a high school education in order to get a college education, so it matters as far as preparing you for that stage of life.

But reading over your question you seem to have a good point as far as you specifically are concerned. A high school education doesn't appear to have done you much, if any, good.
