I have had people tell me this and I don't think "weirdo." I usually think, "Oh my.... what is this person experiencing? What emotional pain do they have that they have to cut themselves?"

A therapist must have a security about themselves that is not based on the relationship...or the potential relationship between her/him and the client sitting in front of them.
If that therapist has that security...it must be based on a marriage between their own personal integrity...and a core of principles that cannot be altered by the nature of the affliction...of the client they are to help.
If all these things are in place...then that therapist would see the person who cuts themself as a human being who uses the cutting to deal with a deeper pain...and it is the therapists job to help that person unearth and face that deeper pain...without judgement or condescencion...and work with them until they become whole again.
Unfortunately...most therapists are not up to the task when it comes to self harm. Much research is necessary in order to avoid the many nincompoops passing themselves off as therapists. Good way to get started is to find a support group for those who are recovering from self harm(cutting) and talk to those who no longer cut themselves...and ask their experiences in finding the right therapist...and just how to go about doing so.
Good luck.

PS. Be careful when reading the life stories of people who cut. Some of the more painful stories are enough to trigger you harming yourself. If you feel wobbly or uncertain as you read...there is no law that says you can't take a break...or skip to another story. Youare not alone...and you never have to go through this path by yourself...the choice is up to you.
