My mom always told me to suck on a lemon drop. The sugar coats the throat and soothes it too.
My dad always said that I should gargle with hot salt water (yuck, no way). That always helps him.
My favorite though is to go buy and Icee and freeze my throat. That always works for me and it tastes a whole lot better.

Just as Brian said prepare a gargle for yourself, also add some carbonate, this makes its taste a bit softer.
If you make this once in a day for a week you will never have to take any medicines...
Get well soon...

One of the best things is to gargle with salt water. Just mix a tsp salt in 8oz warm water and gargle with it periodically. This helps with healing. Salt is a natural preservative.

Gargle with warm salt water. Surprisingly enough, salt actually has healing qualities. Fill a glass with warm water and stir in about a teaspoon full of salt and gargle. Just make sure you don't swallow any of the salt water.
