I swaddled my 3 children and they were always more settled than lying free. Babies like it as it feels safe and secure and mimics the womb. When I was in the hospital after having the first I thought it a bit strange the way one of the midwives even swaddled him with a hand at his face but I suppose this is how most babies lie in the womb - not with their arms flat against their sides! But yes - it is safe. If you've never done it then ask to be shown just to put your mind at rest that you're doing it correctly.

Yes, just make sure you do it tightly so they can't get the blanket loose and smother in it.
Also NEVER put them on their tummy when swaddled (you shouldn't anyway, but especially not when swaddled) because they will have no way of lifting their head up if its smooshed in the mattress.

Yes - ask your midwife to show you how to do it.
Its best to use light material like cotton so baby doesn't get too hot.
Don't cover a swaddled baby with a blanket as they might overheat.

Yes it is. Generally do it in a recieving blanket or light blanket. If it's cold something warmer will be okay but make sure baby isn't sweating. I recently read an article in the paper that if a baby sweats he isn't ventalating properly and has a higher risk of sids.

Yes, just make sure the blanket isn't covering baby's nose and/or mouth.Swaddling is excellent for babies because it makes them feel as if they are in the womb, safe, and tight!

I think it is safe & comforting for the baby to be wrapped tightly so long as it is not too tight.

When i was in hospital they told me that i wasn't allowed to do it as the baby overheats but when i got home the health visitor said it was ok and showed me how to do it. It stopped my little one from crying so its up to you as the parents.
