I want to buy a new car and need to make sure I get the better quality vehicle. So many models have near identical versions in the other brand name. So which is the better car maker? Thanks!

I was told 20 years ago that Mercury was the poor man's Ford when it came to quality. Now I'm being told the opposite. If it's all just styling, I'm fine with that. Thanks all.

In the present I would say Ford is better than Mercury cause you get more variety of vehicles to choose from, in the past Mercury was more upscale than Ford and the Mercury's from the old days were a poor man's Lincoln.

They are made by the same company. They both use the same quality standards, etc. But since they are cutting so many jobs and losing so much money then there's no way I'd touch anything from Ford, Lincoln, Mercury until they start making a large profit again.
When a company gets into that kind of trouble, the executives are told to cut costs and they do it by using less quality control, less man-power, and lower quality components. So even though the vehicles look the same, they are going to be serioulsy lower in quality then the same Ford vehicle 10 years ago when the economy was much better. Right now they are sending out vehicles that wouldn;t have been allowed out of the factory pre 9/11.

Mercury's will typically have a higher level of standard content, although if you match them up option for option, they are pretty much the same price. It pretty much comes down to the persons individual taste as to what styling/options/colors they prefer. Also, the Fords start at a lower trim level, for example, there is no Mercury vehicle equal to a XLS Explorer, or a Fusion S.

Mercury is simply a more upscale version of Ford. Which can be a good thing for consumers, because you can play off the different dealerships, knowing you are getting the same thing, in order to get a better price.

THEY ARE ALL OWNED BY FORD MOTOR CO. THEY WERE BRANDED BY HOW FANCY OF TRIM YOU CAN GET ON THEM--THIS WAS ESPECIALLY TRUE MANY YEARS AGO. FORD WAS THE BOTTOM LEVEL NEXT WAS MERCURY AND THEN IF HAD MONEY YOU BOUGHT A LINCOLN. SOME OF THEIR MODELS STILL FOLLOW THIS FORMULA --EXAMPLE--FORD EXPLORER--MERCURY MOUNTAINEER, LINCOLN AVIATOR. THEY PROGRESS FROM BASE PRICE YOU ADD MORE ON THE FORD THAN MERCURY AND THEN LINCOLN -- THERE BASE PRICE GOES UP ON EACH LEVEL.
