There are no restrictions on how the batter may hold the bat. In fact, there is no requirement for the batter to even bring a bat to the plate.

Nothing specifically prevents that. Other than intelligence. If the bat is held backwards and the handle has been treated with any substance to improve grip it would qualify as going beyond the 18 inch limit and would be removed from game.
Some players have done this during an intentional walk.
However, trying it would bring up safety concerns that actual contact would cause the bat to shatter and would probably create an idiot rule and an umpire would take control "for safety"

I have not seen rules about how the batter must hold the bat. Maybe, since the object of the game is to put the ball out of the park whenever possible, there is no reason for a rule like that. There is going to be no power on that end. Right? Go to the MLB website, there is one place to read the entire book of MLB Rules.

The single most difficult activity in all of sports anywhere on this planet is hitting a moving round object squarely with another moving round object. You'd make this more difficult because?
Yes, there's a rule - it's called common sense.

while i havent heard of any other story other than daryl spencer back in the 60's who held his bat upside down in a game, although he was being intentionally walked ive never heard of rules for or against it.

lets use our common sense for a second please. you have a better chance of hitting out of the park with your barrel than your handel so unless you would like a low battin g average and your entire team to hate the barrel would be a better place to use.

No, I've read the whole "batters" passage, and they do not say that holding the bad, backwards it illegal.
Check out this for the passage.
