I am a Canadian citizen, but I was born in a small city in Iran. The United States export laws ban exports of all almost everything (including software) to countries like Iran and Cuba.

So when I go to download or purchase certain software that I need for work (for example any Adobe, or Oracle products), their terms of agreement bans me from getting the software. This is the beginning of Oracle's terms of use which I must agree to before using their products:

"You are not a citizen, national, or resident of, and are not under control of, the government of Cuba, Iran, Sudan, Libya, North Korea, Syria ..."

The keyword here being "national" and "Iran."

Again, I'd like to stress that I am a Canadian citizen.

Also, I'd like to add that I've been a Canadian for as long as I can remember (I've only been to Iran as a small child); and that, no, I don't do what the Iranian government tells me to do -- nor do I do what the Canadian government tells, or any other government for that matter.

I'd rather not renounce my Iranian citizenship (as one of the answers suggested), mostly since I'm not ashamed of being an Iranian, and don't want to send that message; but also, I won't be able to enter Iran anymore if I do.
