I agree with Chuck M. There are too many variables. One can make an approximation based on the averages of data from a large trial or test, but there really is no answer that is sufficient. Some of the variables that need to be taken in to account are the exact size of the tootsie pop, if the tootsie pop is damaged or blemished in any way in the area that is to be licked, how large the center chocolate chew is, how thin the actual candy portion of the tootsie pop is that is to be licked, how much saliva is used to remove the candy layer, the temperature of the room, the temperature of the saliva, the length of each lick, the chemical make up of the saliva, et cetera.

Here's a report from someone who tried it: 'It took 545 licks to get to the center of the Tootsie Roll Tootsie Pop. It took the same number of licks to get to the center on the opposite side of the pop. It was literally so close between the two sides that I could not really tell if one was first, or the other. It took 1453 licks to completely dissolve said Tootsie Pop. This Tootsie Pop was a purple one.'

ooooooohhhh. I've (believe it or not) actually done that. To get through the whole tootsie pop I had to lick it 586 times!! Me and my best friend each did it. She got 615. We were like using a tally mark for each time we licked it. I guess it depends on the person that is licking the tootsie pop. I love those commercials tho. Especially the one with the owl.

It really depends on the thickness of the candy part. It took me about 700 licks, but we were doing it in school, and EVERY SINGLE PERSON got a different answer. I also heard that these college kids built a machine to lick the lollipop in exactly the same way every time. They still had answers that varied.

Some students from M.I.T. and Cal Tech and while I don't remember the exact number it was something like 300 for one group and 500 for the other.
