I think it would be because of the same reason people cover themselves. Speedos tend not to cover and thus sometimes things are not under control. In society, uncontroled behaviour is not stimulated. Society also dictates our appearance. We are demanded to shave even between eyebrows, to dress this or that way. The industrial look, full of makeup, silicons, liposuction, etc. has taken over. Those who dare not to belong to the mayority, may end up being scapegoated.
Rio De Janeiro is a good example of a society where people are not frustrated upon their natural body and it's natural way. USA is the counterexample of this. In USA there is a phobia of gay people and just a mere allusion to anything that would expose the macho is considered a threat. Speedo is the victim.
In my country it is normal to wear both Speedos and shorts. I have a Speedo- shorts (from early to late teens)- Speedo story. I wear Speedos when I am on the beach (allow me to say: of course), but I put on somethig more adequate when I play sports, or even beach volleyball. Cotton sports underwear is a better option for jogging and similar activities.

i think that if you have the body for it great. wear them. i just personally don't like seeing the naughty bits of any man. they leave nothing to the imagination. but at the same time, I don't think that out of shape girls should wear a bikini or thong either.
i love a nice water polo player, swimmer or diver who can actually pull the look off. but anybody else with any ounce of fat does not belong in them.
i like the boxer brief style of speedo some body else mentioned.
for a good visual of who and why people should or should not wear speedo, check out the governator attached. i rest my case.

It's very cultural. Rio is a Latin American city and people there have been very accustomed to Speedos and most don't really care if men wear them. It would also probably work in Europe and Japan, but this is, again, because of accustomization.
Personally, I think it looks really tacky, almost like briefs.
Kudos though for having enough courage for wearing it! If you have it, flaunt it!

I think you've answered your own question -- that it's largely a cultural bias, just like nearly all fashion questions. People from 400 years ago would think that WE all dress weird today, but we think that THEY all dressed wierd (think of those pictures of Elizabethian-era Englishmen dressed in ruffles and frills).
In many cultures, tight-around-the-crotch men's attire is associated with "showing off the package". Whether gay or straight, a lot of people are put off by that overt display of genitalia, just as many people object to women wearing thongs.

I don't hate Speedos. I think they look great on a guy with a nice body. Of course, I'm gay and I suspect straight guys -- American straight guys, that is -- wouldn't agree.

Speedos just give out way too much information! As for bikinis - again, way too much information!

I think a guy looks gay in a speedo no matter how hot his body is.

They make only one piece swimsuits for girls, and the guys suits are just gay. It looks like they've borrowed their girlfriend's bikini bottoms. Seeing their "equipment" through their "water panties" is just gross and a total turnoff, no matter how hot a body or face the guy has. <3

well......i guess i don't HATE them. it's just MOST guys don't look that great in them. i'd like a guy in skin-tight shorts better. (like boxer briefs) and i'm not scared to see a guy in a speedo. (unless he looks like ron jeremy)
