It's not only the drying that causes the shrinkage. 100% cotton needs to be washed in cold water and rinsed in cold water. If you want the shirt to keep it's shape, it's better to wash it in the delicate cycle.
Once the shirt is clean, really shake it out to remove as many wrinkles as possible. Hold the bottom and shake then turn it around, hold the top and shake. Pull the shirt into shape.
You can hang it on a hanger, either indoors or outdoors. Either way, you're shirt will dry and it won't shrink.
If your mom has shrunk some of your cotton shirts, there is a method to get it back to it's original size, though it doesn't always work...but it's worth giving it a try.
Wash the shirt in cold water, rinse in cold water. Once it's clean, use the shake method mentioned above. Then, ask someone to help you stretch it back out to it's original size. Lay the garment flat to dry if the cotton is thick (like a knit cotton sweater) and hang it if it's not thick cotton (a t-shirt for instance).
The reason this sometimes works is that cotton can be stretched, even once it's shrunk... though it might not work if the shirt has been dried too many times in a dryer.
Happy shirt stretching!

Cotton shrinks when it's washed in hot water. Use warm water and a warm dryer and it won't shrink enough to notice. If your old enough and your mom will let you, start doing your own laundry. Mom might be to busy separating and washing things separately.

If it´s 100% cotton you can even wash it it a really hot wash 95ºc, but many cotton shirts have a special finish to them so really they should be washed on a 40ºc, check the label before washing your shirt.if you use the guide lines it will stay the size it should be

wash it in colder water if you can. that will help. if you hang to dry, it may still shrink but no where near as much as it could if you threw it into a dryer.
