We need it because of people like you and "annie red" who have strong opinions on issues about which you are uninformed or confused. As several other have told you, the Equal Rights Amendment never passed! Whatever gave you the impression that it did? That fact alone is one reason for the need for some sort of bill.
As to "annie red," whose opinion I hear voiced almost every day, a "gay rights bill" would NOT give gays "special privileges." It would merely guarantee that they have the same rights as everyone else and can't be discriminated against simply because they are gay.
Also, "bleeding heart liberals" (name calling is always a clue as to the clarity of the writer's thinking) have many, many things to be concerned about these days. This is just one of many issues liberals are working on. (And for what it's worth, this isn't an issue that is of concern to liberals only. Many thoughtful conservatives also support efforts in this area.) And your concern is about "significant others," not "sufficient others." Ironically, a gay rights bill might help with your concerns on this issue. And the laws that you think are adequate now are "anti-discriminatory," not "non-discretionary." And they aren't adequate or we wouldn't be having the problems we are.
Please, folks, try to get your facts and your words "straight."

We don't. Its just a group of bleeding heart liberals that have nothing else to focus on and therefore they have jumped on
this. Its a shame really, I am not opposed to gays, but rather to the fact that they should be given special privileges, every group has them now except the white working male. Also I am opposed to the fact the "sufficient others" can not get health insurance and such but that if allowed to marry then gay partners would. We need to back up to some basics and stop bringing about all this other crap. Also the ERA did not pass but they have protection under the non-discretionary laws and that should be enough.

Excuse me? The ERA did NOT pass.
A gay rights bill merely adds "sexual orientation" to laws that ban discrimination in housing, employment, insurance, etc.; language already refers to race, gender, age, disability, religion, marital status and other factors.
And no, they are not protected already.

But they're not classified as a minority. It's just now that they're finally being accepted. At least now things are a lot better than they used to be. Have a good day.

Because the society in nowadays thinks that gay people are sick and that way they are gay, not that they are born that way. They have the right to live the life we live.
THEY ARE PEOPLE
