3GHz is the processor speed.
It sounds like the pentium-D chip which isn't the latest and greatest. Newer chip is the core2Duo....the older chip isn't terribly bad or anything. Just an older processor on an older chipset motherboard.
$600 isn't bad at all if it includes the 17" monitor...that's usually $150 by itself for even the cheapest flatpanel model.
With Vista being the resource hog that it is....the duo chip runs it a lot easier. Also, at that price, I suspect it's got an integrated video processor. That would pose some headaches with vista as well.
Overall, it's not a terrible deal if you plan to run XP on it but I would be a little cautious if you want vista anytime soon. They're basically pushing the older technology on you but the price is quite reasonable. It won't come with an sli motherboard or anything but you could upgrade to a decent agp graphics card someday and adding some extra ram might make it a little more efficient.

GHz is the clock speed of the processor. A 3GHz processor operates at 3 billion cycles per seconds. Clock speed isn't everything in a processor, though. For example, a 3GHz Core 2 Duo is much, much faster than a 3GHz Pentium D. The Core 2 Duo does more work each clock cycle.
Like an above answerer, I would caution against buying a computer at Wal-Mart. It's better to shop around at stores that sell lots of computers like Best Buy or Circuit City.
A 3GHz PC for $600 probably has a Celeron D, Pentium 4, or Pentium D processor, and you want to avoid those if possible.

3GHZ is your processor speed (CPU speed), my guess is you are looking at a pentium 4 processor, maybe even pentium D, and your nephew is right you can find a better deal. With computers its better to spend a little more so in 2 years your computer will still be running well with future technology and other advancements, there is always something new in the tech world every 6 months. If you can try buying a computer package at around 1,200USD, 1,000 for computer and 200 for 19" monitor, Core 2 Duos are very good processor (they have 2 CPU which is why the highest processor speed goes at 2.93 GHZ) but if you want to save money try AMD's FX2 processors they have two CPUs also, if you'd like to customize and dont mind S&H costs try cyberpowerpc.com.....also motherboard is very important so try and get the best available motherboard in your budget. hope this helps, goodluck.

Sound like a good deal!
Ghz stands for Giga-Hertz which is basically a way of measuring how fast the processor can go (not how fast it goes).
The processor isn't the only thing. You should check the RAM and the type of processor.
But this computer sounds okay for daily tasks.

3Ghz is the spped of the processor, the main component in a computer. the processor (CPU, Central Processing Unit) does all of the equations, solves the problems, and runs the programs. the speed (3Ghz) means that it runs at a bandwidth of 3,000,000,000 hertz, its clock speed.
a faster clock speed does not mean a faster computer, only means a faster processor. if you look, processors used to be reaching 4Ghz, but since they are becoming more efficient with clock cycles, they can lower the speed of the CPU and actually increase the output by doing more per clock cycle. you can easily build a CPU with a 200Ghz processor, but i can guarantee you it wont do anything per clock cycle, and will take even longer than my little 2.4Ghz to load windows.

It means 3 Gigahertz, or 3 billion hertz. I've never seen a decent computer at Wal-Mart, I wouldn't get one there if I was you. And just make sure you don't get one anywhere that's an Intel Celeron or Celeron D.
