I clean my coffee maker regularly, more often than is recommended in the manual that came with it, but still can't get all the pink gunk out of it. Would not having it set to start automatically make a difference?

Do you clean it by running vinegar thru a brew cycle? I have never seen 'pink gunk' in one and I used a programmable for several years that required leaving water in over night.

It should be fine to make ahead of time and set, run hot water with vinegar thur once a week , like on a regular coffee run , that should help keep it cleanner,

and don't leave the water IN the coffee maker -
put it in a separate container to settle out there for 24 hours -
then pour it carefully (no shaking or stirring) into the cofee maker
best of luck

try buying a water filter for your faucet (or they also make pitchers where you pour the water in and it filters it into a pitcher that you can store in the fridge. I have one it works great!) they're fairly inexpensive and that should help.
