there is someone in our band who is not holding his own. we're recording a full length album, and he is the only one left to finish recording. he hasn't shown up multiple times when he was given the chance, and he's also came about two seconds from missing a few of our shows. his excuses normally lead to his girlfriend. i want to give him an ultimatum and let him know that his main priority is girlfriend or us, and that his status in our band depends on his answer. how should i approach him and let him know whats up?

Just tell him he is holding you guys back. Give him a deadline to record and if he doesn't, tell him he's out. I don't think it should be his girlfriend OR the band, but he needs to find the balance. She could go in the studio with him and hang out while he records. Be firm, though. If he doesn't meet the deadline, start looking for his replacement.

You need to address it professionally. Pull him aside or bring him in as soon as possible. Describe or list the events causing the problem, tardiness, incomplete work etc. Let him know the band is on the verge of a breakthrough. But it is necessary for him to achieve his particular parts. Set an expectation for his performance. And the penalty. Get him to describe a plan of action that he intends to take to resolve the problem. Knowing that you value his input, not only on the project, but in solving the problem will make him more active in fixing it. Also give him a time frame it needs to happen by. Document your meeting and the problem, plans, etc.

The girl friend is just a convenient excuse. Your ultimatum should be that take the band seriously or he is out. If he gets rid of the girlfriend and there is still a problem then what? The bottom line is taking the band seriously no matter what. If he gets rid of the girlfriend in order to that, it is his decision, not yours.
