I actually USE that right?

Why waste their lives fighting for a right that I'm not allowed to use?

Dissent isn't only a right, it's an absolute necessity for the health of Democracy. And that's the "Freedom" that everyone keeps talking about, and that American soldiers are supposed to fight for. Take that away, as many Republicans would like, and you no longer have a Democracy. You have a Totalitarian state.

And then...America is no longer the "Land of the Free". It becomes the "Land of the Drones". And you can see the beginnings of that when people say things like, "Don't say what you think, don't say what you believe... it will 'embolden' the enemy!" That's what we hear today, and if we allow those voices to call the shots, tomorrow it will be, "Don't embolden the dissenters!". And then all that's left is the dogma... and the drones.

Because your views fall somewhere on the political spectrum between liberal and conservative, or one or the other, and as long as that's the case you're always going to have an opponent. I hate to say this, but American troops aren't fighting for yours or my right to dissent(if you're talking about the current conflict, anyway). If that were the case, as so many flag wavers presume, then who's fighting for your right to dissent when troops aren't in conflict anywhere? The point is, I will dissent about anything I so desire to- I don't need American troops to be in conflict somewhere on the globe to make that possible.Nevertheless, your question is a damn good one and it underscores the illusion of objectivity in a country where freedom of speech is supposedly such a prized "right"

This always happens in a democracy in a time of war. Conservatives show their true fascist colors by questioning the patriotism of those who exercise their free speech. The bottom line is that conservatives and Republicans really don't believe in free speech or democracy for that matter. They like to use the word "liberty" and "freedom" a lot to show how patriotic they are, but operationally they prefer strong authoritarian leadership and suppression of dissent.

Your right to dissent is not abridged by others rights to dissagree with you.

It would be abridged if you were arrested and put in jail, but soldiers have fought so -that- would not happen.

Americans had the right to agree or dissent with what is happening in Iraq because they have freedom of choice.

This question highlights what a "free" and "democratic" society is all about. This is contrary to what consevatives think - they are fundamentally about limiting people's rights and freedoms to only things they believe in. Ironic, eh? Conservatives claim to support the military, and yet at the core, do not understand what it is they're supporting.

I think your question is a valid one.

Sadly, we have hit a point in our culture where we are so polarized that we feel the need to "defame and destroy" anyone and anything that doesn't agree with our world view. This applies equally to Republicans and Democrats, liberals and conservatives. And if you look at the answers that preceed and follow mine, the point will be proven from BOTH sides.

Ironically, in doing so, we bring ourselves one step closer to destroying that which really matters.

Very good question but the answer is that it is just politics... ppl know that ppl opposed to what Bush is doing are not really unpatriotic... they know they really do love this country and freedom..

Alll the bologna about being a defeatist, hating America, hating freedom, blah blah blah... that is just typical behavior of the Republic's mind. They know the truth but those kind of ppl really believe that they somehow win by name calling.

The truth is they lose not only personally in the fact they are lying, but they lose for America in dividing us.
