Because we are the super power of the free countries of the world. For long years others have looked to us for guidance and example - and military might when they haven't been able to do what needs to be done themselves. Queen Elizabeth II is little more than a figurehead for Great Britain, especially when compared to the power a President of the United States wields.

America was based on freedom in as many aspects of life as safety can allow. The leaders, therefore, would be called the leaders of the free world. Just because the Common Wealth covers 1/4 of the world doesn't mean that it's a free world.

And, no, Bill Gates does not rule the world. He doesn't make laws, he supervises software development.

LOL...Queen Elizabeth??? Give me a break.

America is the most powerful nation on earth and we ALWAYS take the lead on things. We take the lead on everything and we ALWAYS PAY FOR IT. We are the leaders of the free world....You people just get to come along for the ride. And by the way. You people are terrible back seat drivers. Now shut up and go home.

queen elizabeth II doesn't even lead england. the parliment does. no, the commenwealth of england doesn't really exist anymore since it lost all its colonies, the last one being hong hong.

american presidents are called "the most powerful man on earth" beause, for one, our economy runs all of the other economies on the planet. our stock market rules the rise or the demise of any of the others, therefore, rules whether people in other countries will eat one day and then the next day, not. if our economy falls, there will be a world depression. it isn't that the president runs our stock market, it is that our stock market and therefore our economy runs others.

other countries trying to develop themselves get the most money from the usa. in addition, countries that cannot afford to give health care to their sick get the most supplies and medicines from the usa. that's why AIDs, even in africa, is on the decline. they get food dropped in, by us, when they are starving, too.

the usa has the best and most modern armed forces in the world, as well as weaponry equipment. we build our weaponry better even than does russia (formerly the soviet union).

the usa to date has never played around with changing our type of government: we are the republic of the democracy that everyone in the entire world wants to live in.

because america itself is so powerful, that is why the president is referred to as the most powerful person on the planet.

Because they have big mouths and even bigger egos. It is about time the so called leaders of the world got a grip and realised that it is not Bush and Blair who rule the world, nor even Elizabeth II, Juan Carlos or any crowned heads. It is people with names like Rothschild, Branson, Murdoch and Bill Gates who are the real decision makers.

Its nothing to do with the size of the Nation, it mainly has to do with the influence the USA has on the world, America directly and indirectly controls a large amount of the worlds resources.

USA has massive influence on international organisations such as UN - the richer the nation the larger the contribution you make

Please note USA is the worlds richest nation! they have serious military might... nobody wants to f..... wit America

Take Iraq ... it was a quarrel between Iraq &usa .... that the Whole world got involved in it.....

America is a vast self sufficient nation .. and unlike the rest of us they could survive in isolation .

During the Cold War, the U.S. was the main force set up against the Communist bloc (the "unfree" side).

The U.S. President, as the leader of the U.S. military, became the leader of the free world.

outside the US they are seen as leaders, but within the boundaries of this country, they are servants for the people and by the people.
just because someone runs for public office and he or she happen to win the election, does that make him a leader ? i suspect the answer is a resounding NO !

Because we are all free to do as we are told by faceless people we do not know or ever likely to meet.
