I started my period when I was 11 and was devastated. It was the summer and I was on swim team. We all know you can't go swimming with a big pad in your swimsuit, let alone even wear a swim suit.

My mother and I talked about tampons and I was the one that was scared to wear them. She bought several different kinds and we put them in water to see how they swelled when they were wet (tampons, if inserted correctly, do not leak because they swell to the shape of your body and "catch" the blood).

I have tried the slender regular type that boasts it's for teens, but when this tampon swells it gets longer. I always felt like it was going to come out of me.

I have settled on the tampax brand that are in a pink box. They have a plastic applicator and swell width ways, which is more comfortable for me.

As far as regular or super, I suggest you get regulars unless you bleed very heavily.

The directions (with pictures) come right in the box of tampons.

Remember, don't leave a tampon in for more than 8 hours and remember to take the last one out at the end of your period. Read the leaflet in every box of tampons. It's a big help.

First off, when you first try to insert a tampon, it's very important to be relaxed. Inserting it after a hot bath or shower might help. You can't hurt your body by doing anything wrong, so please don't feel frightened.
Don't worry about talking to your mum, she will have been through the exact same thing as you when she was your age, and she will understand if you are embarrassed.
Inserting a tampon shouldn't hurt, but it may feel uncomfortable and possibly a little bit of pain the first few times. You need to feel gently with your finger until you come to a softer part, and this is where you will insert the tampon into your vagina. Start by using the smallest size tampon your mum can find, they're often called 'mini' or 'beginner'.
In my opinion, yes, tampons are better than pads because there is less discomfort and you can go swimming with them still in. Also, they are far more discreet. They will not leak, unless you have chosen too small an absorbency. You should leave a tampon in for a maximum of eight hours, although accidentally leaving it in for longer will not hurt you.
I don't know of any videos or websites to help, I'm afraid, but all tampons come with instructions which should help you. And don't forget you can always ask your mum - don't be embarrassed!

Hope this helps, and apologies if I've missed out any points!

First thing you should do is RELAX. That is the key.

Your mom is there to help you with this sort of thing. So don't be shy to tell her you want to use them.

I prefer tampons, and will never wear pads again. You can swim with a tampon in. They don't leak like pads, especially out the ends. It may seem uncomfortable at first, especially inserting it for the first time, but once it's in you shouldn't be able to feel it at all. If you do it may not be in far enough. Also, they don't smell. As you may or may not have noticed, pads can tend to build up odor, but tampons don't since they are inside of you.

There is an insert with every tampon box that has step by step instructions and pictures. The links below should also be helpful.

I am in menopause but I remember my first experience with Tampons well. I was going on a boat trip with possible swimming and there was a guy going that I liked, I was 13 yrs old. I also was afraid to discuss this with my Mom, but she used Tampons. I took a couple of hers, read the instructions which were still in the box and inserted one. I never felt it and I never went back to pads, except when my babies were born and the doctors won't let you use tampons right after birth. They were comfortable, didn't show, didn't smell (I always felt the heavy periods I had smelled), and they are very easy to dispose of, just flush down the toilet. I have two grown daughters and I ordered packages from one of the companies and they sent pads, panties that you could insert pads, tampons etc. My oldest daughter began using tampons within a year of her periods, my other daughter began her periods later, I think almost 14yrs old. I got her the kit around 13yrs and I came home from the store, the package had come and she and her girlfriend (who also hadn't began yet) had tried out all the products. I laughed til I cried. Needless to say, when she began her period, she went straight to the tampon. I hope this helped you. Try It, if you don't like it, go back to pads.

Tampons can be better than pads in the fact that they are cleaner. You do run the risk of getting Toxic Shock Syndrome. It is extremely rare but that risk is there. As long as you change it on a regular basis you shouldn't have a problem. Tampons can not be felt if they are put in correctly. You may start feeling it if it is time to change it. Tampons do not leak unless you do not change them on time. If you are nervous about it leaking until you get used to them you can use a pantyliner too. I don't know of any videos but a pamphlet comes with all boxes of tampons and it has pictures showing you how to insert them. I recommend the slimmest tampon you can find to use the first time just because you are going to be nervous about inserting it. I would just ask your mom if you can use tampons now casually and not make a big deal out of it. If she says no then wait until another day.

First of all, don't be scared! I was very scared to start using tampons. I went through a whole box the first time. Tell your mom that you would like to try tampons when you are at the store with her, or just casually throw a box in the shopping cart. I prefer to wear tampons. They are so comfortable and keep you feeling dry. You will probably not feel anything when you put it in if you do it right and relax. They should not leak if you use the right absorbency. Read the directions when using tampons, it will really help. Also, read about TSS before using them. You should start with a low absorbency on the first try. Here are some of my favorite brands and types:
-Platex gentle glide
-Platex slimfits
-Platex sport tampons--most comfortable!!
-Tampax pearl (they hurt when you take them out)
Remember to try different brands and types until you find the right one for you.
Your mother will know the most about this. You really should talk to her maybe in the car or when you are alone with her. She will be able to help you the best. I hope that I helped! And go to www.beinggirl.com. It is very helpful! -Rayna F.

I didn't use them at that age. I tried to once at the pool, my friend let me borrow one, and it was very painful to put in and I couldn't get it in all the way. But, there were girls that age using them. The best ones to get are the tampax pearl ones, I think. To this day I still have trouble with those cardboard applicator ones. The pearl ones use a smooth plastic applicator and the top is soft, and the tampon itself has a silky material to it. I would start with the thinnest ones till you get used to it, and it may take a few tries, till you get them in right. If you use the thinnest ones and have a heavy period, change them often too, and wear a pad when you go to bed. Explain, to your mom, you'd like to just try them, use both, it is healthier to do so anyway! I have never had a tampon leak, I've had pads leak more. If you change them often, you'll never have a problem. There is an insert inside the box with pictures to show how to put them in.

Playtex silk glide, or the like. Yes, they "feel" weird when you first start using them, but you don't notice after a while. Kind of like when you first start wearing a bra. When you buy a box they come with instructions on how to use them. Also, you need to know your period flow. Just like pads they have different ones for different flows. If you still can't talk to your Mom, maybe find a free clinic or an older or adult female who you trust. Never leave a tampon in for more than 4 hours, do a Google search on tampon use or go to afraidtoask.com.
Good luck!

tampons are awesome! they are comfortable (when in right) and clean and just awesome! I started wearing tampons when I was 14 and I will never go back to pads, except be sure to always WEAR PADS AT NIGHT, because you run a bigger risk of being injured when you have tampons in for a longer amount of time. Remember, tampons are a big responsibility, but so is a period. Good luck! ps try slender regular first, they are small enough for you and don't hurt, but usually no tampons hurt going in unless it is too dry, then just take some sink water on toilet paper and moisten the area. Go to the website for more detalis about all you need to know...

personally i prefer tampons they are more practical and discreet and alot easier to use once you've got the hang of it. Usually when you buy a box of tampons there is an instruction leaflet included with illustrations on how to insert the tampon. It is probably a better idea to use a smaller tampon at first to get used to it then move up a level the next time. The only discomfort i ever feel with a tampon is when removing it in a hurry, if everything is done correctly you shoud'nt be able to feel it at all whilst wearing one. Don't feel embarrassed to talk to your mum about it and just try to feel relaxed. If you still want to know more theres a good link below which i used when i was in your situation. x good luck x...<3
