Men tend to be attracted to what they see, while more women than men are attracted to what they hear, feel, or experience. Does that make sense?

Like you said, there's tons of individual variation . . . I for one, as a woman, feel a heck of a lot more visual than most women supposedly are.
But the stereotype goes that men are more visual, i.e. they can just see a picture of a naked woman or man, or porn, and that's all they need. Women, on the other hand, are presumed to need to have a little bit of a storyline- a context for their fantasies; they want to know about the people, have an emotional investment in them. More romance, I guess you could say, whereas men supposedly don't mind pure, raw, unadulterated sex between strangers.
But, again, those are huge generalizations.

Women can be attrected to ideas about a guy more than what a guy looks like. A good study was done where women were shown several hundred pictures of men and asked to rank their attractiveness. Half the men were wearing blue "prison jumpers" and half whering various "uniforms of success," naval officer outfits, pilot uniforms, bussiness suits. The women selected the guys in power wear. They were really the same guys with only the outfits changed.
Men chose consistently based on their "type" and hip-to-waist ratios.

I think this is a very interesting question. Men seem to be attracted to visual signals and cues while women seem to be attracted to tasks, emotions, and verbal descriptions. Think about the difference between Playboy and romance novels.

Verbally and emotionally excitable. This is due to the type of neural connections as well as estrogen that womens' bodies produce.

it seems to me that women tend to be more emotionally rooted in their connectedness to others initially. As people get to know each other I think, with no evidence at all besides my own experiences, that these differences balance out.
