Many studies have addressed the underlying factors related to handwriting. These factors can be categorized into external and internal factors. Examples of external factors are instructional procedures and materials used during writing. Internal factors are abilities found within the student: visuomotor skills, visual perception, motor planning (i.e., the ability to plan new motor behavior), in-hand manipulation, and kinesthetic awareness. Several authors have discussed the link between various aspects of cognition—particularly attention, memory, and language—and handwriting skill. It is suggested that success in handwriting can be optimized when the internal factors are at age-appropriate levels, making the student ready to benefit from classroom instruction.

I know for myself, I am ambidextrous, and this caused problems when I was a kid. I couldn't decide wether to be right or left handed, so I'd stop writing and switch when a hand got tired. I ended up being a South Paw, but I'm notorious for my sloppy handwriting.

In my belief, my bad handwriting is from my indecision in my younger years when my first motor skills were being taught.

Also, in schools, I can say as truth, they are terrible at teaching lefties. I had to work twice as hard to get my letters correct because I had to invert all the motions.

Also, writing, for everyone in general, is affected by one's phsycological state. When stressed, one's handwriting can be drastically different from when relaxed. When depressed, a person's handwriting will slope. As well, handwriting comes from personality characteristics. A socially distant person sometimes have odd spacings between words and people who are known to be idealists, their handwriting slopes forward.

Really, there are so many factors, it's amazing. You have quite a project on hand. Good luck =D

Disconcern for subject matter being written, sloppiness, ability to write is altered in some way. Perhaps pupil never learned to write well. Most doctors can't or don't either, so this is not indicative of the future successes.

Bad hand to brain co-ordination. I always had very beautiful handwriting whereas my brothers' was like a scratching. He has always preferred to use his left brain hemisphere and I the right.
Have I got that right? He is more rational and I'm more intuitive.
Also when we were kids we were forced to use our right hand, and I now know he was born left handed but was forced to learn to write right handed.

pupils tend to have bad hand writing when they are rushing and don't take thier time to be neat. if teachers give students more time to do work in class instead of assigning it for homework pupils will write neater and ur problems of disiphering unreadable work will be ceased! (im in 7th grade i would know!)
